Chocolate Maca Powerhouse Smoothie!

That time a month brings some waves of cravings for every female i know, and even if you really try to resist it, your body is stronger then your mind at these times...and I'm a big believer in listening to your body (especially when it craves some chocolate ;).

I opened my cupboard looking for a processed chocolate bar that my husband sometimes sneaks in the house without me "knowing" but with out any luck (he probably found a better hiding spot, good job babe!) so i got my creative juices flowing and decided to come up with a quick treat that will satisfy my craving but also bring some benefits along.

I found cacao powder, maca powder, hemp seeds, some bananas and almond milk..and TA DA!

Knowing how good the ingredients are for my body made this whole experience even better! so let me tell you a little about the benefits of the 2 main ingredients: Maca and Raw cacao powder.

Maca Powder

Mac root has been prized for generations as an energy enhancer and mood stabilizer. Itโ€™s a nutritionally and powerfully complex with life-giving and beauty-enchancing ingredients like phytonutrients, amino acids, vitamins and fatty acids. Plus, thereโ€™s an abundance of trace minerals and phytohormones.

1. Vitamins

Maca is rich in vitamin B vitamins, C, and E. It provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids.

2. Sexual function
Maca is widely used to promote sexual function of both men and women. It serves as a boost to your libido and increases endurance. At the same time it balances your hormones and increases fertility.

3. Womenโ€™s health and mood
Maca relieves menstrual issues and menopause. It alleviates cramps, body pain, hot flashes, anxiety, mood swings, and depression. If you are pregnant or lactating you should avoid taking maca.

4. Energy
Within days of using maca your energy level may increase. It is also known for increasing stamina. Many athletes take maca for peak performance. If you find yourself tired most of the time, experiment with maca to see if it helps. Just a small amount could be exactly what you need for a boost!

5. General health
Maca helps your overall health in a number of ways. It supplies iron and helps restore red blood cells, which aids anemia and cardiovascular diseases. Maca keeps your bones and teeth healthy and allows you to heal from wounds more quickly. When used in conjunction with a good workout regime you will notice an increase in muscle mass.

But be very cautious if you have a cancer related to hormones like testicular and ovarian, among others. If you have liver issues or high blood pressure you should ask your doctor before taking maca.

6. Skin
Many people take maca for skin issues, as for some people it helps to clear acne and blemishes. Another benefit for your skin is that is decreases sensitivity. In hot or cold weather, maca may help your skin withstand extreme temperatures.

7. Mood balance
If you find yourself overcome with anxiety, stress, depression or mood swings, maca may help alleviate these symptoms.

**Maca shouldn't be taken in large amounts. If this is your first time trying maca, start with 1/2 teaspoon and build it up up to 1 tablespoon as an average daily dose. It is recommended rotating it on for a few days and off for a few days.

Raw chocolate also contains many important vitamins and minerals including:

  • Magnesium (Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral. Anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, and stiff โ€” whether it is a body part or an even a mood โ€” is a sign of magnesium deficiency so getting this mineral during this time a month is very helpful if you expriencing any associated discomforts) and other essential minerals including calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, and manganese
  • Polyphenols called flavonoids, with antioxidant properties
  • Vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B9, E
  • Essential heart-healthy fat: oleic acid a monounsaturated fat
  • Protein
  • Fiber

Recipe:

About 1.5 cup of unsweetened almond milk

1 TBS cacao powder

1/2 TBS Maca Powder (I use the Navitas naturals organic raw maca powder, can be found on amazon or at any health food store)

1 1/2 ripe bananas (mine were pretty small so if you using a large one one might be enough)

1 TBS hemp seeds

Put all ingredients in the blender and blend to smooth consistency! ENJOY!
